Job Title:

Head of School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health

Professor of Nursing

Editor-in-Chief, Nurse Education Today

School Responsibilities:

I am responsible for taking forward the School together with our practice partners to enhance care and develop careers within the dynamic healthcare sector.

We aim for continued recognition of our high quality nurse and midwife education at pre-registration level and beyond.

We will also continue to generate research to maintain our reputation for world-class research confirmed in RAE2008.

Teaching:

I teach on the pre-registration nursing programme and at Masters level.

Research:

My research interests are in social connections (loneliness and social capital) and health behaviours and their impact on morbidity and mortality.  Currently I am looking at loneliness as a predictor of disease progression in peripheral arterial disease, loneliness as a determinant of physical activity in over-65s.

My other research interest is in self-neglect and I am currently analysing read code data for co-morbidities and self-neglect presentations in primary care.

I have just completed the evaluation of pre-reg education in Scotland for NES.

Member of nursing sub-panel in RAE 2008 and member of sub-panel 3 in REF 2014

Sub-panel member REF 2014.
