Core Skills

Core skills are statements about the student’s level of competence in the 11 Core Skills, which are integral to every specific skill which the student undertakes.

The core skills are as follows:

The criteria for the core skills are derived from the Standards of Proficiency for Pre-Registration Midwifery Education (NMC 2004). and the QAA Scottish Subject Benchmark Statements for Midwifery.

The following is an example of a core skill as found in the Profile followed by the page on which you need to comment and sign.

Core Skill 1 - Care Planning

  • Aware of theory and evidence base underpinning care
  • Relates theory to practice
  • Observant and knowledgeable
  • Participating in care with supervision
  • Can transfer existing knowledge of and experience in the nursing process to midwifery practice and documentation, including the concept of client-held records
  • Can participate, with supervision, in the assessment, planning, implementation with rationale and evaluation of evidence-based midwifery care in partnership with the woman, taking into account relevant physical, psychological, social, cultural, public health and spiritual dimensions.
  • Is beginning to identify changes in clients’ conditions which require to be reported, seeking advice accordingly.
  • Prioritising care on an on-going basis. Can demonstrate the ability to relate elements of the life, human and psychosocial sciences to the assessment, investigative procedures, therapeutic interventions and clinical midwifery skills.

  • Maintenance of Level 1
  • Integrating theory and evidence base to inform practice
  • Developing proficiency
  • Reliably participating in care with supervision
  • Can reliably participate, with supervision and in partnership with the woman, in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based midwifery practice
  • Always reports change and is willing to seek advice
  • Can demonstrate the ability to relate a knowledge of pathophysiology to client assessment, investigative procedures, therapeutic interventions and clinical midwifery skills.
  • Can interpret and respond to significant changes in health, medical, psychological or social circumstances in women and babies in her care.

  • Maintenance of Levels 1 and 2
  • Safe and competent to practice independently with support from mentor
  • Shows imagination and creativity in midwifery assessment.
  • Competent in planning, implementing and evaluating midwifery care in partnership with the woman
  • Effectively undertakes the management of midwifery care, taking into consideration available resources.
  • Independently devises solutions to a variety of midwifery problems.
  • Recognises deviations from the normal in midwifery and instigates appropriate action
  • Articulates and justify decision-making processes associated with managing practice.
